Rail Fastener Manufacturer Faces OSHA Violations

MEDIA SPOTLIGHT — Rail fastening systems manufacturer Pandrol USA LP could face more than a quarter million dollars in fines by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Washington Township Times reports.
Bridgeport, NJ-based Pandrol was cited for 25 safety and health violations following a May 21 inspection.

“The three most serious violations — deemed ‘willful’ disregard of the law or indifference to the heath and safety of workers — regarded the company’s failure to properly shut down or turn off power to pieces of machinery before work is performed on them, failure to have proper machine guards and failure to ensure employees are trained on managing the energy supplied to machinery,” writes Michelle Caffrey of the Times.

The severity of the violations places Pandrol on OSHA’s Severe Violator Enforcement Program, which mandates follow-up inspections to ensure compliance.

Other violations include problems with noise exposure standards, electrical hazards and a lack of personal protective equipment.

Pandrol has about two weeks to respond to the citations and proposed penalties, which could total $283,500.
