Steelmaker Nucors 2001 sales were down, but analysts project higher numbers for 2002, due to both higher prices and increased volume.
Nucors cold finished steel sales including production at its two fastener plants in Indiana and Arkansas fell from 250,000 tons in 2000 to 203,000 for 2001.
Steel sales were off 10% from 2000. U.S. steelmakers struggled in 2000, though Nucor continued its expansion with opening new steel plants.
Nucor entered the steel fastener business in 1986 when it opened a $25 million plant in St. Joe, IN. The facility produces hex-head cap screws, hex bolts and socket-head cap screws. Nucor Fastener opened a second plant in Conway, AR, in late 1995.
Nucor fasteners are used in automotive, machine tool, farm implement, construction and military applications.
