New Mectron Measuring Ends Operator Differences
Mectron Engineering Co. released a first article fastener inspection machine to reduce costs and disputes between fastener manufacturers and end users.
First Article Inspection is traditionally performed utilizing a range of devices and gauges.
The most common are decades-old techniques of optical comparators, vision cameras, laser mics, calipers and micrometers.
Many gauges require handwritten or manual entry reports with the accuracy depending on the operators’ use of the gauging device and the machine operators performing measurements.
Upon completion of the manufacturing process parts are shipped to customers’ quality control departments perform receiving inspection, which also is subject to gauge interpretation.
Many costs and disputes arise between manufacturers and end users based on these techniques.
Mectron’s First Scan 150R is a non-contact automatic precision measuring system. The major benefits are the ability to perform non-contact measurements with accuracy and speed and networking data.
The First Scan 150R utilizes a telecentric backlight illuminator to produce a high contrast silhouette of the piece. The illuminator increases edge contrast and measurement accuracy designed specifically for gauging applications.
The silhouette from the piece passes through computer-designed lenses. The digital line scan camera can take measurement data at rates of over 14,000 updates per second.
Light pattern changes can be detected at sub-micron resolution.
A calibration cone provides the basis for measurements to be automatically provided by the machine. The calibration cone can be certified by an outside company.
Once the part image is scanned, measurement zones can be pre-set along with dimensional specifications and control limits. Specific thread tolerances are provided automatically via drop-down features for thread sizes.
