Southern California College’s Fastener Program Fills Its Classroom
Gary Jimenez of Monogram Aerospace Fasteners explains mechanical fastener inspection to El Camino students
The fastener program at El Camino College / Compton Center will be full this spring.
David Gonzales, the El Camino CACT director, said the aerospace fastener training day class is full and has a waiting list. The evening class has 20 student enrolled with only four seats remaining.
Full classes plus a waiting list may be a first for Compton’s Machine Tool program, Gonzales said.
The Southern California College started an “Aerospace Fastener Boot Camp” at El Camino College after working with industry partners and forming the Aerospace Fastener Manufacturing Training Alliance.
The first 23 students started in an eight-week/320 hour program at the Compton Center in 2008.
The Industrial Fasteners Institute donated books and assisted in getting equipment donated.
IFI member Pat Meade said that in “the past few months experts from our member companies have been training college instructors on the basics of cold heading, threadrolling, centerless grinding and inspection relative to aerospace fastener manufacturing. The college instructors have also visited and been instructed” at IFI member plants.
Toward the end of the semester there will be an “Industry Day” for potential employers to meet students.
