Field Fastener Emphasizes Lean in $3.5m Addition
(l-r) Jim Derry and Bill Derry
Field Fastener broke ground on a $3.5 million, 43,000 sq ft addition to its Rockford headquarters.
“Our goal for the facility is to be the most efficient warehouse in the industry,” Jim Derry told GlobalFastenerNews.com. “We have worked with several lean consultants to optimize the layout and work flow of the facility.”
The addition includes loading docks, a quality laboratory, a work out facility, great room with fireplace and game room for Field’s 56 “team members.”
Founded in 1976 by Dick Field, the distributorship was acquired in 1990 by brothers Bill Derry and Jim Derry. Subsequently Field Fastener sales have averaged a 19% annual growth rate.
Field boasts a 99.8% on time delivery rate; 99.96% percentage of orders shipped correctly; and 99.64% inventory cycle counting accuracy.
BusinessRockford.com reported the Derrys had considered moving the business to Texas where several major customers are located. The state of Illinois provided $1.1 million in tax credits and job training funds and the county will consider a property tax abatement for the expansion.
Stephen Konya, chief of staff for the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity, said the incentive package for Field Fastener shows the state does value its business leaders.
Konya told Business Rockford.com that the state has had several “competitions with Texas over Illinois businesses, and we’ve been able to convince those companies to stay in Illinois. It means a great deal to us to keep that tax base here in Illinois and those jobs here for future Illinois residents.”
Bill Derry was the 1997-98 president of the National Fastener Distributors Association and Jim Derry the 2010-2011 president.
