Atlas Copco Opens Adhesives Center in Michigan
Atlas Copco SCA recently opened its first U.S. innovation center in Auburn Hills, MI, where automotive and industrial customers can test adhesive solutions for their applications. Atlas Copco operates seven innovation centers worldwide.
“Adhesives are increasingly used for example by automotive manufacturers that want to use lighter materials such as aluminum instead of steel to make the vehicles more fuel efficient,” the company stated.
“Traditional welding can be difficult with the lighter materials, opening up for alternative assembly technologies.”
Another increasingly popular assembly method is self-pierce riveting. Atlas Copco increased its self-pierce riveting capacity with its 2014 acquisition of Henrob, which operates facilities in Britain, the U.S. (Michigan and North Carolina), Germany, Italy, Australia, Scandinavia, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, China, Taiwan and South Africa. “We are pleased to see that the innovation centers for different assembly technologies – tightening, riveting or adhesives – are a success,” stated Mats Rahmström, President of the Atlas Copco’s Industrial Technique business segment.
The new U.S. site has already attracted more than a hundred visitors from major automotive OEMs.
Atlas Copco SCA runs more than 200 customer tests worldwide every year.

North America produced 28% of Industrial Technique segment revenue, with South America producing 4%, Europe 44%, Africa/Middle East 1%, and Asia/Australia 23%.
Full-year Industrial Technique segment revenue increased 21% to MSEK 11,450, while operating profit rose 20% to MSEK 2,557.
