NEWS BRIEF
Australia-based ITW Retail Group is building a 231,500 sq ft distribution center (DC) at South Dandenong in Melbourne.
The facility, outfitted with integrated logistics and paperless picking technologies from Dematic, should be operational in the second half of 2013.
“The new DC will not only enable us to pick and pack orders faster, more accurately and cost-efficiently than before, it will enable us to increase throughput volumes and provide us with the organizational agility to respond to changing customer demands over time,” stated national operations manager Brian Angwin.
A key feature design is a smart zone-skipping conveyor system, which will transport orders only to those areas where items are required, reducing order processing time and increasing system throughput capacity.
Voice-directed picking will also be introduced, utilizing trolleys for cluster picking of small or single line item orders in a multiple orders per tote (MOPT) configuration. RF scanning will be used for replenishment, put-away and inventory management requirements.
Once the South Dandenong facility is functioning, ITW Retail Group will close its distribution center in Victoria. The group still operates distribution centers at Kewdale in Perth and at Banyo in Brisbane.
ITW Retail Group’s customers include builders and the DIY market in Australia and New Zealand, with 7,000 SKUs of such brands as Zenith, Ramset, Buildex and Pryda. ©2013 GlobalFastenerNews.com
