Baker: Election Not Expected to Change Berry Amendment Process
Jason Sandefur
After winning some change in the Berry Amendment earlier this year, the lobbyist for the Industrial Fasteners Institute sees “little likelihood” of additional legislation on the specialty metals requirements in 2007.\ “Most observers believe the new law should be given a chance to work,” Laurin Baker explained.
The Department of Defense has yet to issue interim guidance on implementing the 2006 law “and both the DoD and the defense industry are working hard to develop a regulatory approach that can work.”
Congress compromised on revisions to the Specialty Metals Provision of the Berry Amendment, including what a lobbyist termed “some progress” in answering fastener industry concerns. The updated language in Section 842: Protection of Strategic Materials Critical to National Security was passed as part of the FY2007 Defense Authorization Bill (see FIN, October 3, 2006).2006 FastenerNews.com
