Blendulf Teaching FTI Course on Bolted/Screwed Joint Design

Bengt Blendulf will teach a new Fastener Training Institute course – Fastening Technology & Bolted/Screwed Joint Design – in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago and Los Angeles during 2010.

Blendulf of EduPro U.S., Inc. said the two-day course was created to give design, manufacturing, and quality engineers along with industrial technicians a thorough grounding in the complexities of mechanical joining with fasteners. This seminar will provide information on the most current specifications, techniques and guidelines.

Course issues include: Elastic interactions between fasteners and joint materials; Preload, clampload and workload, definitions and balance; Joint relaxation, estimation methods for load losses; Choosing the right fastener for the joint; Temperature influences on dissimilar joint materials; Tightening methods (torque, torque-angle, others); Lubrication – influence on tightening torque and torsional stresses; IPC (In-Place-Cost) for optimizing joint economy; Standards to use for domestic and international markets; Developing the joint diagram – a powerful evaluation tool; Safety factor calculation methods; Vibration loosening mechanism – causes and prevention; Fatigue failures – actions to prevent or minimize impact; and Corrosion (galvanic, stress corrosion, etc.), prevention methods.

The course was developed for anyone who designs mechanical joints with fasteners; purchasing, testing or quality control; fastener development, standardization or design; or in fastener assembly or manufacturing.

Blendulf was on faculty at Clemson University in the College of Engineering & Science until 1996, when he formed EduPro US Inc. to focus on education and consulting in the area of fastening technology and bolted/screwed joint design.

Blendulf is a founding member and formerly served as chairman of the Bolting Technology Council – now ASTM F16.96 Bolting Technology.

He has been in the metalworking field since 1962 and in the fastener industry since 1966.

Educated in Sweden in mechanical engineering, Blendulf moved to the U.S. in 1974 to start a subsidiary for a leading European fastener manufacturer.

Blendulf has authored more than 100 technical papers in addition to published articles related to fasteners and international standardization. He is a contributing author of the Handbook of Bolts & Bolted Joints (Marcel Dekker, Inc).

Dates for the course in 2010: Baltimore, April 14-15; Los Angeles, June 9-10; Chicago, September 22-23; and Atlanta, November 17-18. For information contact Fastener Training Institute. Tel: 714 484-4747 Web: fastenertraining.org
