Boeing Granted Composite Aircraft Joint Patent

The Boeing Co. has been assigned another patent for its composite aircraft joint technology.
Boeing was granted patent (8,333,345) developed by Kirk Ben Kajita of Newcastle, WA, and Douglas Allen Frisch of Renton, WA, according to Targeted News Service.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: 

“A method and apparatus comprises a first number of layers of a composite material for a wing, a second number of layers of the composite material for the wing, and a metal layer located between the first number of layers and the second number of layers in the wing. The metal layer has a first thickness at a first area configured to receive a number of fasteners and a second thickness at a second area.”

The patent application was filed on Aug. 26, 2010 (12/868,886).

In 2010 Boeing received a patent on a fastening assembly for composite structures “that will reduce or eliminate internal sparking and prevent hot gas from escaping into the structure when it is hit by lightning.”

Both patents are related to Boeing’s design and production of the 787 Dreamliner. ©2012 GlobalFastenerNews.com
