Boeing Says Latest 787 Repair Takes Up To 2 Weeks Per Plane

Boeing Co. said it could take as long as two weeks to fix a tail issue on its 787s, the Associated Press reports.

The work involves jacking up each plane and undoing one fastener at a time to reach the problem point.

The latest 878 problem involves a gap between the inside of the airplane’s skin and the structure that supports it. The repair involves putting in shims about the size of a piece of legal paper and the thickness of two pieces of paper.

Doing that on each plane takes seven days to two weeks, Shanahan said.

“There’s no complexity involved,” stated Pat Shanahan, Boeing’s senior vice president and general manager of airplane programs. “You just have to be very precise, you have to go slow.”

The problem is “not an issue for the fleet. Not something that requires a redesign of the airplane, not something that puts at risk the airplanes that are in service.”  ©2012 GlobalFastenerNews.com
