Canada Continues Tariffs on Carbon Fasteners from China and Taiwan
The Canadian International Trade Tribunal upheld tariffs on certain carbon steel fasteners from China and Taiwan (Inquiry No. NQ-2004-005) while ending tariffs on stainless steel fasteners from those countries.
During the sunset review that began in April 2009, trade officials in Canada determined that “the resumed dumping of certain carbon steel fasteners from China and Chinese Taipei, and the resumed subsidizing of such products from China were likely to cause injury to the domestic industry,” the tribunal stated.
The antidumping and countervailing tariffs, imposed January 7, 2005, were set to expire.
The duties, which ranged from 1.39% to 170%, did not include nuts and bolts or stainless steel fasteners from China (see FIN 1/25/05).
The original investigation, begun in 2004, was prompted by a complaint from Leland Industries Inc. of Toronto, which claimed that cheap imports from China and Taiwan had increased, flooding the market and driving down domestic prices.
