Canada Reviews Tariffs on Asian Fasteners

The Canadian International Trade Tribunal today initiated an expiry review of 5-year tariffs imposed January 7, 2005, on certain carbon steel fasteners from China and Taiwan (Inquiry No. NQ-2004-005).

The duties, which ranged from 1.39% to 170%, did not include nuts and bolts or stainless steel fasteners from China (see FIN 1/25/05).

By August 20, 2009, the Canada Border Services Agency will determine whether an extension of the tariffs is necessary. If so, the tribunal would have until January 6, 2010, to decide on final action in the case.

The original investigation, begun in 2004, was prompted by a complaint from Leland Industries Inc. of Toronto, which claimed that cheap imports from China and Taiwan had increased, flooding the market and driving down domestic prices.

The tribunal will hold a public meeting on November 16, 2009, in Ottawa to hear evidence and representations concerning the review. Companies wishing to participate in the tribunal’s expiry review should file a Notice of Participation by August 28.
