Doane: Results of Tariffs?

Ray Doane remembers the tariff battles of the 1970s.

Doane, who started in the fastener industry with Bowlin Equipment in Oakland, CA, in 1963 and is now with Ababa Bolt of San Diego, pointed out that all the U.S. companies that tariffs on Japanese fasteners were supposed to protect back then are now gone:  Lamson & Sessions (where Doane went to work in 1965), RB&W, Cleveland Cap & Screw, Screw & Bolt Corp. of America, Republic and Bethlehem.

“All it served to do was allow everyone to raise prices,” Doane reflected during the Pacific-West Fastener Association meeting.

It did change importing of fasteners from Japan, Doane noted.

“That’s about the time Taiwan fastener manufacturing started.”

“Will tariffs on China and Taiwan just move production to Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries?” he asked.

Doane also asked that if tariffs are put on threaded rod, tires and fasteners, “what comes next?” ©2009 GlobalFastenerNews.com
