EFG Transferring Plating Work in Wake of Fire
In the wake of the July 13 fire that destroyed Northern Wire’s plating line, parent company Elgin Fastener Group told GlobalFastenerNews.com it’s transferring some of the company’s plating backlog to another facility.
“We have taken steps to transfer some of the Northern Wire plating backlog to our Best Metal Finishing facility in Osgood, Indiana, for the purpose of implementing a temporary Northern Wire plating schedule,” EFG director of marketing Timothy Busching told GlobalFastenerNews.com.
Busching said EFG is “working to determine the length of time the plating line will be out of operation.”
Officials say an early morning fire on July 13 at Northern Wire in Wisconsin caused an estimated $2 million in damage. The estimate included damage to the structure, equipment and contents of the facility.
However, Busching told GlobalFastenerNews.com the company could not yet verify the accuracy of the damage estimate.
“At this time we are still evaluating the extent of damage,” Busching stated.
Firefighters responding to the blaze at the wire forming facility around 1:30 a.m. found “a great deal of fire in the metal plating area of the factory,” according to a press release issued by the Merrill Fire Department.
Because the fire was in the plating area of the factory, the regional Hazmat team was alerted. However, firefighters were able to extinguish the flames.
A fire-rated overhead door with a fusible link kept the fire contained to the plating area, officials said. No injuries were reported.
The facility maintenance supervisor told fire officials that the plating line was last operating on Friday, July 11. While the investigation into the cause continues, officials said the cause of the fire “appears to be electrical in nature.”
Northern Wire, LLC, which is owned by Elgin Fastener Group, is one of the largest privately-held custom wire forming companies in the U.S. Established in 1970, the facility has grown to 100,000 square feet in northern Wisconsin.
Indiana-based Elgin Fastener Group is comprised of ten domestic specialty fastener manufacturers and metal finishing operations: Ohio Rod Products, Leland Powell Fasteners, Chandler Products, Silo Fasteners, Landreth Fastener, Quality Bolt & Screw, Northern Wire, Telefast Industries, and Vegas Fastener Manufacturing; plus Best Metal Finishing. Since 2011, EFG has been a portfolio company of Audax Group. Web: elginfasteners.com
