Fastener Imports & Exports Fall For 2nd Straight Month

For the second straight month, both exports and imports of U.S. fasteners fell in December, Zepol reports.
Exports of U.S. produced fasteners fell 13% to $234.1 million in the final month of 2012, according to trade data released by the U.S. Census Bureau. That decline came on the heels of a 5% drop in fastener exports during November.

December fastener imports to the U.S. declined as well, falling 3% to $344.8 million. That drop followed an 11% decrease to $353.7 million in November.

The top five consumers of U.S. fastener exports in December were Canada (down 21.5% month-to-month to $71.26 million); Mexico (down 23.2% month-to-month to $65.69 million); the UK (up 5% to $12.52 million); China (down 14.2% month-to-month to $9.48 million); and Brazil, which replaced France on the top-five list with $9.47 million in U.S. fasteners purchased.

The top five countries importing fasteners to the U.S. in December were Taiwan (up 8.4% to $107.98 million); China (down 3.3% to $77.33); Japan (down 7.2% to $55.92 million); Germany (down 18.6% to $17.47 million); and South Korea, which replaced Canada in December as a top-five fastener importer to the U.S. with $15.77 million.
