Fastener Induction Heating Process Featured at IMTS

Induction heating systems manufacturer Ambrell plans to have an automated induction heating demonstration during the IMTS on September 10-15 in Chicago.
A scaled-down demonstration of a fastener preheating application will be conducted at the event.

“A Fanuc small robot will pick up ½” stainless steel tubes and place them in an encapsulated coil. At that point, the tube will be heated for just over 10 seconds by an Ambrell 2kW/150-400kHz EASYHEAT induction heating system.”

“With it preheated, it’ll be removed by the robot. In a production environment, the preheated tube would proceed to be ‘hot headed.'”

Ambrell and Nutek Industrial Systems work together on heat treating applications as part of the Ambrell Hardening Team, which includes  Induction Tooling Inc., a long-term tooling and heat treating process supplier; Nutek Industrial Systems, an automation specialist; and Ambrell.

“This preheating application gives you just a glimpse into the capabilities of this team,” says Tom Dickerson, Director of Sales.

According to Ambrell, induction heating of fasteners is quick, efficient and provides maximum repeatability.

Features and benefits of induction heating include:

– Rapid heating method for improved productivity and higher volumes

– Precise, even heating of all, or part, of the fastener

– A clean, non-contact method of heating

– Safety and reliability; instant-on, instant-off heating

– Cost effective; reduces energy consumption compared to other heating methods

– Easy to integrate with remote workheads
