Fastener Product Depth Part of Startup Hardware Stores Strategy

A new model of hardware store is going head-to-head with major DIY retailers such as Home Depot, BNET reports.

The typical Home Depot or Lowes store is around 150,000 sq ft, where the latest hardware store model is about 18,000 sq ft.

“Its purpose is not to sell everything anyone could ever need, but to be “narrow and deep” — fewer categories, but more choices within them, writes BNET’s Michael Hess.

While this model doesn’t sell major building materials, “it offers a wider variety of fasteners and cabinet hardware than Home Depot, since do-it-yourselfers are more likely to regularly need — and return for — nails, screws and knobs than, say, sheds.”  ©2010 GlobalFastenerNews.com
