Ford Fasteners Marks 50th Anniversary

Fifty years ago a salesman started Ford Fasteners Inc. with two heading machines, two thread rollers and a cement mixer to tumble the product.

George Cellary – who studied journalism in college – had gotten into hardware sales and worked his way up to regional sales manager for National Lock in New York.

National Lock had a small fastener division where he learned about fasteners. His sales success and belief in customer service led him to start Ford Fasteners in 1963.

Initially, he produced what has become known as Ford 410 stainless steel screws to be used in windows and doors and refrigeration.

Today Ford Fasteners is co-owned by George’s sons – Steve Cellary and Chris Cellary.

Just out of college, Steve Ford was to start in sales. But the header needed a helper and Steve moved into the job. In the long run, Steve is glad he had the experience. “I know how metal moves,” he pointed out. “I understand special tooling and dies.”

Chris started his Ford career in shipping.

George Cellery never retired and died in 2004 at age 84.

Today the Ford 410 screws are sold more to the construction and solar energy markets. “You have to keep evolving,” Steve said.

The customers may have changed, but Steve said his father’s customer service emphasis remains. “We do this all day long, every day,” Steve said.

Ford supplies self-drillers, self-piercing, sheet metal and thread cutters. Ford assembles EPDM bonded washers to self drilling screws and custom paints screws.
