Grainger January Sales Grow

Grainger reported January sales increased 12%, which included a 5 percentage point contribution from acquisitions and a 2 percentage point contribution from foreign exchange.

Sales in the U.S. grew 6%, which included a double-digit gain in light manufacturing, growth in government revenue, and an increase in heavy manufacturing, commercial and retail. These gains were offset by flat reseller activity and a drop in contractor sales.

In Canada, daily sales were up 4% in local currency.

“Strong growth to customers in the oil and gas, and agriculture and mining sectors contributed to this sales performance, while sales to contractors declined,” stated investor relations director Bill Chapman.

Daily sales for Grainger’s other businesses soared 28.3% in January, “primarily the result of the incremental sales from the acquired businesses in Japan and India, along with strong sales growth in Mexico and China.” This segment achieved 2009 revenue of $150 million.
