WAFD Honors Hayes
At its spring meeting in Coeur dAlene, ID, WAFD presented Bill Hayes of Hayes Nut & Bolt with its FQA Hero Award for his work on the Fastener Quality Act.
Tom Fulton, lobbyist for the Fastener Industry Coalition, recalled when Hayes visited the office of Sen. Conrad Burns to tell us what the implications of this bill were for the industry.
Fulton was on Burns staff at the time. Burns took an interest in the subject and a leading role in the initial legislation and subsequent amendments even though we thought at the time there were no fastener distributors in Montana.
Thank you for listening to me, Hayes responded to Fultons comments.
Hayes recalled walking into Burns office and initially speaking to junior staffer Eric Fox, who thought he was talking about a Biker Bill. Motorcyclists came in the week before to complain about the FQA requiring headmarking that altered the cosmetics of their machines.
Hayes had been going from one congressional office to the next looking for someone to take an interest. Burns and his staff were the only ones that would listen to us.
WAFD earlier presented Hero awards to Joe Greenslade, Barry Porteous, Tim Marzano, Vickie Lester, Steve Schonholtz, Ed McIlhon, Nancy Rich and the members of the Chicago Bolt, Nut & Screw Association.
