The inaugural Joe Greenslade Young Leadership Award will be presented to John Medcalf of Field Fasteners and Peak Innovations Engineering.
The Greenslade Award will be presented at the autumn meeting of the Industrial Fasteners Institute October 5 in Memphis.
The IFI announced the Greenslade Award in memory of Joe Greenslade, who served as IFI Technical Director from 2007 to 2015.
The award will recognize individuals who early in their career have contributed significantly to the fastener industry. One of Greenslade’s passions was to mentor and encourage young people and accordingly the Greenslade Award recognizes the importance of upcoming generations to the continued success and evolution of the fastener industry.
The award recognizes the first 10 years of Medcalf’s career in developing standards and his scientific knowledge on hydrogen embrittlement of case-hardened screws.
A 2009 mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Medcalf joined Field as an applications engineer. Greenslade himself encouraged Medcalf to participate in fastener standardization committees beginning in 2012. He took on leadership roles, including chair of the ASME Committee B18 on Fasteners. He chaired the subcommittee B18.16 – Nuts from 2014 to 2021, and this year the subcommittee of B18.4 – US TAG to ISO/TC 2. He joined ASTM Committee F16 in 2013, serving as chair of subcommittee F16.97 – Coordination of North American TAGS to ISO/TC 2 since 2015, and subcommittee F16.96 – Bolting Technology chair since 2019. He joined the U.S. delegation at ISO Committee TC 2 and headed the U.S. delegation for 2016 plenary meetings in Shanghai, China.
In 2016, Medcalf earned a master’s degree with his thesis on susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement of case-hardened steel fasteners, a research project that was sponsored by IFI under the guidance of Greenslade.
