IFI Honors McLean, Brahimi With Soaring Eagle Awards
The Industrial Fasteners Institute presented its Soaring Eagle awards to J. Porter McLean of ATF Inc. and Salim Brahimi of IBECA Technologies Corp.
McLean was given the IFI Soaring Eagle Service Award for outstanding time and effort in leadership of the IFI and / or contributions to the health and well-being of the fastener industry.
McLean’s 42 years in the fastener industry include being president of ATF and IFI chairman. He holds a B.S. degree in engineering from the University of Kentucky and started in fasteners with Illinois Tool Works. He became chief engineer for ATF and rose to vice president / general manager before joining FPM Commercial Heat Treating and then become VP/GM of start-up venture MacLean-Fogg Company. He rejoined ATF to become its 4th president in 60 years.
McLean was the 2006-07 IFI chairman and also held roles of automotive division chair, engineering committee chair and IFI representative to the USCAR Fastener Committee
Brahimi received the IFI Soaring Eagle Technology Award for significant contributions to technological advancement of the industry.
The Soaring Eagle Technology Award recognizes those who have made significant contributions to technological advancement of the industry. Contributions include work on fastener standards committees, publication of widely acclaimed principles or documents and development of advancements in fastener-related equipment, products or processes.
Brahimi, from Quebec-based IBECA, has been in the industry for 25 years.
Brahimi is a licensed member of the Quebec Order of Profession Engineers and holds a master of materials engineering and a graduate diploma in management from McGill University – where he is completing a doctorate in fastener hydrogen embrittlement.
Brahimi is chair of the ASTM Committee F16 on Fasteners. He received the Fred F. Weingruber Award from the F16 committee for “outstanding contributions to the development of fastener standards, especially in the field of hydrogen embrittlement.” He authored the first ASTM standard dealing specifically with electrode posited coatings on fasteners and was chair of an ASTM task group on hydrogen embrittlement.
Brahimi also serves as head of the Canadian delegation to ISO Committee TC2 on Fasteners and vice chair of the Research Council on Structural Connectons. He is a member of the SAE Fastener Committee and an instructor with the Fastener Training Institute.

The Industrial Fasteners Institute is an association of North American manufacturers of bolts, nuts, screws, rivets, pins, washers and custom formed parts. Suppliers of materials, machinery, equipment and engineering services are associate members of the IFI. There currently are 72 manufacturer members and 48 associate members.
