IFI Issues Coating Standard
John Wolz
The Industrial Fasteners Institute issued a new test evaluation standard for coatings intended for high-strength structural bolting.
Previously metallic coatings applied to ASTM A490 bolts were prohibited. Because of new inorganic and organic coatings the IFI structural bolting subcommittee developed IFI Standard 144.
The standard demonstrates the basis on which a given coating should be considered by the Research Council on Structural Connections and ASTM Committee F16 on Fasteners for A490 level high-strength structural fasteners. Successful qualification of A490 bolts should assure their use on A325 strength-level fasteners, according to IFI director of engineering Charles Wilson.
