The 10th edition of the IFI Book of Fastener Standards already has a half dozen updates of standards, providing additional reason for the Industrial Fastener Institute’s online edition.

The latest print edition includes 40 updated or added standards since the 9th edition published in 2014, IFI director of engineering & technology Salim Brahimi said.

The digital library provides access to 92 of the most commonly used fastener standards for inch and non-ISO metric standards issued by ASTM, ASME, SAE and the IFI.

The traditional paper “hardcover” 1,236-page book is $600. The online edition is $575 a year for one user.

The book has historically been updated every four or five years, Brahimi explained. The online edition “is always kept up to date,” Brahimi said.

“As a new standard gets published, within a few days it is updated in the online collection.”

Prime for the online edition are companies with multiple users.

“Companies that need multiple books for a single location or books for multiple locations get a much better deal, and several of those have purchased the online subscription,” Brahimi told FIN.

The text is a compilation of ASTM, ASME and SAE standards, which are updates by those organizations. IFI standards “are updated as needed,” Brahimi said.

Historically the book has been re-published every four to five years.

Brahimi said the hardcover edition “used to take approximately two intense years. (Former IFI director of engineering & technology) Joe Greenslade reduced it to less than one year.” For the next update, the IFI is “working to be able to complete and publish a revision within three months.”
