Improper Riveting Prompts Ford F-150 Recall
Ford Motor Co. recalled 12,328 2015 F-150 pickups in North America because a part in the steering mechanism was improperly riveted, potentially causing it to come apart, according to the Detroit News.
The vehicles were built from March 19-30 at Ford’s Kansas City and Dearborn truck plants.
Ford spokesperson Kelli Felker told the News the riveted parts are both steel, but denied that the recall is related to the company’s decision to make the new truck largely of aluminum.
“In much of the F-150, rivets replace spot welds that are typically used in mostly steel bodies,” writes David Shepardson of the News. “The F-150 is up to 700 pounds lighter than the 2014 version and 5% to 29% more fuel efficient.”
About 12,300 pickups are affected in North America, including 8,963 in the U.S., 3,348 in Canada and 17 in Mexico.
