Inadequate Torque on Steering Bolts Prompts Kenworth Recall

Concerns about insufficient torque on fasteners related to the steering gear prompted the Kenworth Truck Co. to recall several new models.

Kenworth said bolts attaching the steering gear to the front drive bracket “may have received insufficient torque” during installation.

“The insufficient clamp load may allow the fastener(s) to become loose and fall away from the vehicle resulting in road debris,” the company stated. “If multiple fasteners were to come loose, the vehicle steering may wander, which could result in a crash.”

The recall, expected to begin in January 2010, involves 3,078 trucks, the company said.

Kenworth said dealers will inspect and re-torque the steering gear mounting bolts for no charge.

Models affected include 2010 T200, T800 and T660, along with W900s manufactured between July 1, 2009, and October 23, 2009. ©2009 GlobalFastenerNews.com
