Increased Use of Aluminum Subject of IFI Seminar
John Wolz
The Industrial Fasteners Institute will conduct a one-day seminar and tabletop exhibition on aluminum fastening for fastener producers involved in designing fastening or maintaining aluminum parts of components.
The seminar will be May 9, 2001, at the Michigan State University management education center in Troy, MI.\
The program is designed for fastener producers involved in designing, fastening or maintaining aluminum parts or components.
Aluminum usage in the automotive and industrial product sectors has increased greatly in the past few years, according to the IFI. Lightweight, reusable and unique engineering properties mean lower MPG and enhanced end of life savings. Although much has been written about its manufacture, less is known about how to fasten aluminum. Types of tooling, fasteners and fastening methods are still being researched.
Seminar Speakers
The program includes 16 speakers on 14 aluminum fastening topics. Dr. Thomas Doppke of Technical Presentations is the moderator. Doppke holds several patents, has written more than 200 articles, lectured and taught frequently in his 40 years in the automotive industry.
Speakers and topics are: Richard Klimisch, Aluminum 101; Randy Kissel, TGB Partnership, Designing Aluminum Attachments; Mike Danyo, Ford Motor Company, Fords Aluminum Intensive Vehicles (AIVs); Matt Schuster, 3M Automotive Division, Adhesive Bonding of Aluminum; Mike McShane and John Vrana, Fabristeel Products Inc., Pierce/Clinch Nuts & Studs in Aluminum; Edward Koneczny, Magni Group Inc., Developments in Fastener Finishing to Prevent Bi-Metallic Corrosion; Sigfried Naumann, Tox Pressotechnik, Mechanical Joining of Aluminum Sheet Metal; Darryl Hissong, General Motors, GMs Electric Vehicle 1; Judy Groves, NovaStar Technologies, Mechanical Fastening with Ultrasonics; Dean Monday, Textron Fastening Systems, Why Pierce Riveting?; Ken Games, Reminc Research Engineering & Mfg. Inc., High Performance Thread Rolling Fasteners in Aluminum; Joe Butvin, AVK Industrial Products, Blind Threaded Fasteners / Installation Tooling Best Practice Design Guidelines; Christopher Friedrich, Richard Bergner BMGH & Co., Elements Made of Aluminum for Fastening Light Weight Components; and Jim Hutchinson, Huck Fasteners, Blind Break Mandrel Rivet Attachments in Aluminum.
The one-day event includes tabletop exhibitors: The Aluminum Association/TGB Partnership, General Motors, Ford Motor Company, AVK Industrial Products, Metal Coatings International, Huck Fasteners, NovaStar Technologies, Magni Group, 3M Automotive Division, Research Engineering & Mfg. Inc., RIBE/ATF Inc. and Technical Presentations Co.
