J.W.Winco Wins Prize for Recession Survival Essay
J.W. Winco Inc. won second prize in an essay contest on “How I Got My Business Out of Hot Water,” sponsored by the Independent Business Association of Wisconsin.
The Winco essay described how upper management reacted when the economy and the industrial manufacturing industry declined in 2008.
“Until then, our business had been growing steadily. In fact, we just built a 40% expansion and redesign of our facility in New Berlin,” marketing communications specialist Diane Lau wrote. “Switching gears so suddenly from a growth outlook to survival mode was a huge challenge.”
Winco’s methods included upper management salary reductions, using employees for tasks previously outsourced, finding more cost-effective shipping, and chipping away at operating costs.
The recession’s lesson are still applied now that the crisis is over, Lau added.
Flexo-Graphics LLC took 1st prize, and Two Men & a Truck took third.
