Japan’s export volume of steel screws in 2012 grew 5.9% to 339,039 tons, Fastener World reports. That level marks the fifth highest in history.

Meanwhile the import volume marked a record high record of 234,188 tons, up 3.4%.

“In 2012, because of the boycott of Japanese goods in China due to the territorial dispute over the Diaoyu Islands, the monetary value of stainless steel fasteners exported from Japan to China plummeted by 14.6% to 55.9 billion yens. Also, the monetary value of fasteners exported from Japan to China comprised 20.8% of the total value of fasteners exported from Japan (down by 5%),” according to Fastener World.

The value of stainless steel fasteners exported from Japan to the US grew 29.3% to 60.8 billion yen, or 22.6% of total Japan fastener exports.

The value of Japan’s fastener export to Thailand in 2012 jumped 32% to 43.6 billion yen. ©2013 GlobalFastenerNews.com
