MCF Moving Into Aerospace for Growth

Military & Commercial Fasteners Corp. is looking to aerospace to continue its growth. The Central Penn Business Journal named MCF the 4th fastest growing company in the region.

Headquartered 80 miles west of Philadelphia, MCF has grown from $6.5 million in sales for 1999 to $44 million for 2008.

In 2009, MCF qualified for AS9100:ISO9001 certification with plans to sell to aerospace companies.

MCF is looking to supplement to military contracts that could taper off as U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan draw to a close, CEO Craig Siewert told reporter Jim T. Ryan of the Business Journal.

Military work is more than 80% of MCF sales.

MCF supplies defense contractor BAE Systems’ Pennsylvania facility, military vehicles, including Bradley fighting vehicles and mine-resistant, ambush protected vehicles.

MCF also is considering export potential. “You find niches, and you go after them,” Siewert told the Business Journal.

Founded in 1972, as a fastener distributor, MCF began manufacturing in 1997 after a client requested better washers.

“We had an ‘ah-ha’ moment,” Siewert said. “Not only could we be a distributor, but we also could be a manufacturer.”

In 2001, MCF added pre-bagged fastener kits for commercial and consumer products, such as air-conditioning units.

One problem in expansion is finding skilled operators.

Some laid off employees from other manufacturers have 20 years of experience, but all on one machine. “The big issue is still finding qualified machinists,” Siewert said.
