The Industrial Fasteners Institute published the 2021 edition of its IFI Book of Fastener Standards, a hardcover compilation of the most frequently used standards for inch fasteners and non-ISO metric fasteners.
The publication represents the 11th edition of IFI fastener standards, which was first published in 1941.
The book contains 96 separate standard specifications issued by ASTM, ASME, SAE and IFI. The latest edition contains 36 standards that were revised since the 2018 edition, plus several new standards, IFI Director of Engineering & Technology Salim Brahimi told GlobalFastenerNews.com.
Dimensional standards appear at the beginning of each product section followed by the related material standards. For example, the dimensional data for a bolt is given in ASME B18.2.1, located is in the front of the Bolt Section, which also contains the material standards for SAE J429, ASTM A193.
Since the 2018 edition, the title does not contain the term “inch” because many of the consensus standards included have been combined into “dual inch/metric standards.” This consolidation has been part of the larger effort in fastener standards committees, ASTM F16, ASME B18 and SAE Fastener Committee, to withdraw redundant ASTM, ASME and SAE metric fastener standards in favor of ISO Metric Fastener Standards.
Although the term “inch” was omitted from the title, this book fundamentally remains the comprehensive reference source for Inch Fastener Standards.
Since the 7th edition, the IFI standards book is a compilation of only the standards. An additional extensive body of technical information and commentary on all technical matters related to fasteners is contained in the IFI Fastener Technology Handbook. This separate book is sold as a companion to the Book of Standards and is available in the Reference Books section of the IFI online store at indfast.org.
Dedication to Joe Greenslade
This edition of the IFI Book of Fastener Standards is dedicated to the late Joe Greenslade, a well-known fastener expert who served as IFI Technical Director from 2007 to 2015.
“He was a true fastener industry icon, highly respected and admired for everything he accomplished and mostly for the person he was,” Brahimi commented.
The dedication includes praise for all Greenslade did during his career “to advance the technology of mechanical fasteners and the practice of fastening, for his dedication to fastener education, for his spirit of innovation, for his mentorship, (and) for his friendship.”
Online Standards Publication Offered
Standards are living documents that continually evolve, Brahimi told GlobalFastenerNews.com.
“Your customers and quality auditors expect you to stay on top of changing standards and to keep your library of standards current. Correcting errors resulting from unintended non-compliance can be both expensive and damaging to your business.”
To address this problem, the organization offers the IFI Online Book of Fastener Standards, a “one-stop” collection that is always current, making it the perfect source of the latest standards. Along with the IFI Technology Connection (ITC), IFI offers the most advanced digital tools to access the latest fastener specifications and technical data.
The 2021 IFI Book of Fastener Standards (hardcover and online) and the IFI Technology Connection are available for purchase at the IFI webstore. Web: indfast.org/shop
The hardcover edition is $600. The online edition is $575 a year for one user.
