Northern Wire Fire Causes $2m in Damage

Officials say an early morning fire on July 13 at Northern Wire in Wisconsin caused an estimated $2 million in damage.

Firefighters responding to the blaze at the wire forming facility around 1:30 a.m. found “a great deal of fire in the metal plating area of the factory,” according to a press release issued by the Merrill Fire Department.

Because the fire was in the plating area of the factory, the regional Hazmat team was alerted.  However, firefighters were able to extinguish the flames.

A fire rated overhead door with a fusible link kept the fire contained to the plating area, officials said.  No injuries were reported.

The facility maintenance supervisor told fire officials that the plating line was last operating on Friday, July 11. While the investigation into the cause continues, officials said the cause of the fire “appears to be electrical in nature.”

The damage estimate included damage to the structure, equipment and contents of the facility.
