Hal Pulfer, 48, of Highland Park, IL, died March 25, 2007, while vacationing with his wife and three children in Hawaii, the Associated Press reported.
Pulfer was owner and president of Mundelein, IL-based specialty fastener company Security Locknut Inc.
Pulfer was on a whale-watching cruise when he was reportedly struck by the falling mast of the 55-foot catamaran as it sailed on the west side of Maui in choppy six-foot waves and 20 to 30 mph winds, the Coast Guard told AP.
At least 50 passengers were later rescued from the sinking vessel. Two other passengers were treated for injuries related to the accident, according to AP.
A helicopter spotted the underwater wreckage near Molokai with parts of the boat broken up and a portion of the hull on the reef, Coast Guard Petty Officer Michael DeNysc said. The boat was last inspected by the Coast Guard in September and was certified for safe use for the next five years.
The Coast Guard said its investigation of the accident could take at least six months to complete. \ 2007 FastenerNews.com
