Import/export risks, chronic fastener mistakes, and successful hiring with predictive analytics are topics scheduled for the autumn conference of the Pacific-West Fastener Association.

Pac-West will meet August 23-26, 2017, at the Fairmont Chateau in Whistler, British Columbia.

Danielle Riggs, director of international trade compliance for Wurth Industry North America, will present “Minimize Your Import/Export Risk!” on August 25. The session will cover liabilities and risks when importing or exporting fasteners, include information (regulations, customs processes, product knowledge and enforcement procedures) members should know before signing or shipping an order; and how to comply with the new ISO standard on risk management.

Carver FACT Center founder Carmen Vertullo will present “Fastener Lessons NOT Learned” on August 25. “Distributors, suppliers, end users, and manufacturers are making some of the same mistakes that were made 20 years ago.” Topics will include why hydrogen embrittlement issues are “on the increase and shouldn’t be at this point”; flagrant violations of the Fastener Quality Act; how to combat the declining importance of lot control and traceability; misapplied joint design principles; and how to safely provide technical help for end users.

On August 26, Bob Nugent will present “Hiring, Developing and Retaining “A” Players Using Predictive Analytics,” a workshop on “how to implement and execute a proven job benchmarking process that assesses the job and talent to find the best match for your company.” Nugent, a senior consultant with MAP (Management Action Programs), will teach Pac-West members how to conduct an effective job benchmarking process to ensure the best job fit; eliminating biases that interfere with job matching; key strategies for job matching to ensure maximum performance; and understand the importance of a candidate’s behaviors, values, personal skills, and task preferences.

Business owners and business executives roundtables will be conducted on August 25.
