Palmetto Aero to Build Plant at South Carolina Airport
Airframe sheet metal fastener manufacturer Palmetto Aero will build a $2.5 million, 77,000-sq-ft hangar at the Lowcountry Regional Airport in South Carolina, CEO Dennis Dent announced. The facility will house Palmetto Aero’s fastener and airframe component manufacturing.
It will add 44 jobs in Walterboro, which has a population of 5,400 and is 40 miles west of Charleston.
Palmetto Aero also acquired two existing hangars at the airport to be developed into the company headquarters and R&D facility. Another hangar built for World War II combat training of Tuskegee airmen, will be the completion and delivery center, electronics installation and repair operation.
Palmetto Aero manufactures sheet metal fasteners and airframe components for aerospace.
Palmetto Aero also will produce the Air Truck, an agricultural and forestry-oriented single-engine utility plane.
Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt noted that more than $1.1 billion in capital investment and more than 3,000 new aerospace jobs have been announced for South Carolina since 2011.
“Palmetto Aero is another example of an aerospace company that has seen the success we are having in this industry and has chosen to be a part of the growth happening here in South Carolina,” Hitt said.
Colleton County Economic Alliance chair Bill Workman said the Lowcountry airport is the largest general aviation airport in South Carolina.
Noting Palmetto Aero was formed in 2013, Dent added that it is based on a background of “aviation manufacturing business in Ohio since 1979.”
“We looked at many possible locations to launch our new venture and found the Lowcountry Regional Airport to have the best mix of advantages that we sought,” Dent explained. “The airport and community are poised for growth, and we look forward to getting in on the ‘ground floor.’ The location is also ideal for the aerospace market with Air Truck, Boeing, and Gulfstream and utilizing the Port of Charleston for the world market.” Web: palmettoaero.com
