PennEngineering Launches iPhone App
PennEngineering launched an app for iPhone and iPad. The app is designed to enable users to access critical installation dimensions for PEM brand self-clinching, flaring, broaching, surface mount and weld fastener products.
The app took about nine months to develop, PennEngineering’s Michael Rossi told GlobalFastenerNews.com. The company hired an outside firm to design the app, and has worked out a few early-version bugs to increase usability.
But Rossi said it was worth the effort. Data available on the app includes mounting hole size, minimum sheet thickness and install height above sheet.
The app allows users to search for products either by fastener family or “product” or directly by part number. The “about” section contains contact information and links.
Rossi said the app replaces a glossy 8.5 x 11-inch slide chart.
“We figured some kind of electronic version of that chart with all of the products we make would be useful for our customers,” Rossi told GlobalFastenerNews.com.
PennEngineering expects to add marketplace-based functionality.
“It’s another tool to help engineers in their jobs,” Rossi added.
The PEMspec app is available as a free download from the iTunes app store.
While the current app only works on Apple products — iPhones and iPads — PennEngineering has already begun development of a similar app for Android smartphones. The Android app is expected to be available in early 2013, Rossi said.
