Rooftop Solar Power Production Begins at P&R Fasteners
MEDIA SPOTLIGHT – P&R Fasteners held a “cord-cutting” ceremony with 150 people marking the completion for a 254.8 KW rooftop solar installation at its headquarters in Franklin Township, New Jersey.
NewJersey.com reported P&R executives and employees, local elected officials, the solar panel supplier and solar developer Solis Partners.
The solar panels will offset nearly 100% of the 100,000 sq ft manufacturing facility’s electricity load.
Between the electricity savings and state and federal financial incentives, the system is expected to pay for itself in less than seven years. With a lifespan of 25 years or more, means nearly two decades of free electricity.
The rooftop solar system totals 1,400 Solyndra panels to generate 295,000-kilowatt hours of electricity and reduce 400,000 pounds of CO2 emissions annually, NewJersey.com reported.
The panels are made up of lightweight glass cylinders that have 360-degree photovoltaic surfaces, capturing direct sunlight from above, diffused sunlight from the sides and reflected sunlight from the roof.
A reflective white “cool” roof reduces air conditioning in the summer and increases solar production.
Speakers pointed to New Jersey’s state incentives for solar projects. New Jersey now ranks second among 50 states after California in solar capacity and first if on a per-capita or per-square-mile basis.
The P&R plant remains tied to the grid to draw energy when there is little or no sun, such as at night, and sending energy to the grid when the solar system is producing more energy than is used.
“Going green is good for the bottom line. Our solar system will yield strong returns over its 25-year life span,” P&R operations executive Brian Margulies told NewJersey.com. “But even more importantly, it is an investment in the environment and in the community, creating a better place to live.”
