Dykes Lumber placed the first order from Starborn Products and remains a customer as Starborn Industries Inc. marks its 50th anniversary.

Starborn was founded in 1961 by Kurt & Florence Gertner in the basement of their Brooklyn three-family home.

Starborn initially imported wood sliding-door tracks. After several years the company began selling hardwood floating shelf and bracket systems manufactured to Starborn designs in local woodworking shops. In 1968 Starborn opened a woodworking plant in an industrial loft in Brooklyn producing shelves and brackets, wood drapery hardware, cabinets and tables.

In 1979 Starborn shifted to importing, including drywall screws.
