STOCKS: Fastener Companies Report Rising Sales
ITW Auto Fastener Segment Sales Jump 28%
Illinois Tool Works “believes most end markets have stabilized and anticipates modest expansion in a variety of worldwide end markets in 2010.”
Transportation segment operating revenue, including fasteners, has grown 28.4% in the three month-period ended January 31, 2010, while construction products revenue, including fasteners rose 14.1% during the period.

Grainger January Sales Grow
Grainger reported January sales increased 12%, which included a 5 percentage point contribution from acquisitions and a 2 percentage point contribution from foreign exchange.
Sales in the U.S. grew 6%, including growth in light manufacturing, government revenue, and heavy manufacturing, commercial and retail.
In Canada, daily sales were up 4%.
Daily sales for Grainger’s other businesses rose 28% in January, “primarily the result of the incremental sales from the acquired businesses in Japan and India, along with strong sales growth in Mexico and China.”

Black & Decker Q4 Fastener Sales Rise
Black & Decker reported Fastener and Assembly Systems segment sales decreased 2% to $154.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2009, which the company claimed showed progress from earlier in the year due to improved auto production. Fastener segment profit fell 8% to $17.5 million.
Full year fastener sales decreased 24% to $536.6 million and profit decreased 62% to $39.5 million. Operating margin fell to 7.4%, “primarily due to the automotive industry collapse early in the year.”
Last quarter Black & Decker announced a merger with Stanley Works valued at $4.5 billion. The all-stock transaction will give Stanley a 50.5% stake in the new $8.4 billion company. Web: bdk.com
Simpson Strong-Tie Sales Drop
Simpson Strong-Tie sales, including fasteners and anchor systems, fell 22% during 2009, with sales to distributors and home centers contracting due to continued weakness in the U.S. housing market.
During the final quarter of 2009 Simpson Strong-Tie revenue slipped 7.5% as sales to distributors “decreased significantly.”
Overall sales at parent company Simpson Manufacturing Co. dropped 22.7% to $585.1 million, while net income fell 77% to $12.2 million. The company recorded U.S. sales declines, while sales in Europe and Canada grew in Q4. Web: ****************************************************************

Fields said fasteners for the electronics market – including standoffs, spacers and cage nuts – helped spur FastenerSuperStore sales more than 300% in the past three years. The company now stocks 30,000 parts.

Tramec LLC and MacLean Fastener Services of Bartlett, IL, announced an agreement for the Kansas-based Tramec to distribute industrial fasteners.
Products include red nylon insert lock nuts, Uni-Torque and Mac-Loc products and the WhizLoc serrated flange screw and bolt product line.
Tramec president Gary Sullo said the new product line “allows us to more fully service the heavy duty tractor and trailer OEM and aftermarket businesses, as well as the industrial market.”
The new business will operate under the Tramec LLC name and will be located in Carpentersville, IL.

Wyandotte Industries has completed 50 years in business. Founded in 1959 by Jerry J. Szpondowski and Evelyn Alexander, the company manufactures special nuts, screw machine parts and specialty fasteners.
Today the founder’s son – who joined the company in 1962 – Jerry L. Szpondowski Sr., owns the business. His son, also Jerry, is sales manager; daughter Christine works in human resources and accreditation; daughter Lori, works in quality control; and nephew Wes is plant manager.
Szpondowski’s father worked fulltime at a previous job while handling the machining parttime when he founded the company.
Today Wyandotte has 51 employees. Customers include American Axle & Manufacturing, TRW Automotive and International Truck & Engine Corp. automotive, construction and agricultural equipment, heavy-duty on- and off-road vehicles, air frame and aircraft parts, diesel engines and hydraulic cylinder applications.
