Oversupply is promping Taiwan to re-impose a ban on imports of Chinese bar, rod and wire\ beginning September 30, Metal Bulletin News reports.
Taiwan lifted its original ban in April 2005 to meet demand from the domestic fastener industry. Now high stock levels, production cuts by local producers and falling sales have flooded the market.
Under the new ban, imports will only be allowed if the product is not manufactured domestically, the required quantity is low and the product is for special use.
China is Taiwan”s largest source for bar, rod and wire imports, threatening the survival of domestic producers, according to the Taiwanese Bureau of Foreign Trade.
Taiwan imported 266,377 tons of bar and rod from China between April 2005 and June 2006. Imports of China steel wire totaled 7,565 tons during the period. 2006 FastenerNews.com
