Tuttle-Stock, Roseman Lead NFDA

John Wolz

Bryn Tuttle-Stock of Spencer Products Co. became the second woman president in the 39-year history of the National Fastener Distributors Association. Joel Roseman of Arnold Industries was elected vice president.\
Tuttle-Stock succeeds Peter Sullivan of Accurate Fasteners Inc.
Jeff Hepner of Telefast became associate chair, succeeding Jim Sullivan of Chicago Hardware & Fixture Co. Char Cooper is associate vice chair.
In 1988 Mary McClure of then Capitol Bolt & Supply Inc. became the first woman to head NFDA.
The Twinsburg, OH-based distributorship was founded by her grandfather, David Tuttle, and continued to the next generation by her father, Robert Tuttle, and two uncles, Thomas Tuttle and David Tuttle Jr. Spencer Products has branches in Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina and Florida. She is sales manager of the Twinsburg facility.
“My biggest goal this year is to restore some confidence and invite members who haven’t been attending to come back and see what is happening,” Tuttle-Stock commented. “During our search process one very wise member said, “NFDA was become stale, we need to make a drastic change to make NFDA not so stale.” This statement has rung in my head since then. I want our members to come back, take part and get active in an exciting dynamic association.”
Last fall the NFDA retained the Chicago-based Smith-Bucklin Corp. to manage the association. “Although there have been some bumps, is a very positive move of our organization,” Tuttle-Stock commented. “They are an organization who only run trade associations. They have strong meeting planning, marketing, IT and accounting departments.”
“The corporation Smith-Bucklin is transparent, they are behind us and help us, but the staff is NFDA staff. We do not refer to them as “Smith-Bucklin.” The phones are answered, “NFDA” and there is a team of people working on NFDA.”
The executive director and team reports to the NFDA board and the board approves the budget. Specialists from Smith-Bucklin are “available to us from the other departments,” Tuttle-Stock added. “I am very enthusiastic about this move and know it was the right decision.”

Roseman started in the fastener industry by accident in 1964. As a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute engineering student he set out to interview with steel companies, including Standard Press Steel. But what he thought was a steel maker was actually the fastener manufacturer best known today as SPS Technologies.
Roseman went on to work for Harvey Jacobson, where he was general manager of Penn Jacobson and Pawtucket Screw Co.
At Rensselaer, he had met David Hirsch and in 1975 he joined Hirsch at Pawtucket Fasteners as vice president of sales. Pawtucket acquired Bell Fasteners in 1976 and is now Vertex Distribution. Roseman was the NFDA associate chair in 1996.
In 2004 Roseman became a distributor by joining Canton, MA-based Arnold Industries as executive vice president.
The board had just chosen Roseman to replace board member Buddy Blatner of Active Screw & Fastener, who became the NFDA treasurer.
Elected to the board are Mark Shannon, Tower Fasteners; Roger Taylor, Assembly Component Systems; Dan Zehnder, Trinity Logistics; and associate Tim O”Keeffe of G.L. Huyett.
The NFDA reported 251 members at the end of 2005. A 55% majority of members are distributors and 45% non-distributors.
The next NFDA meeting will be October 4-6, 2006, in Chicago. The 2007 annual meeting will be April 25-28, 2007, in Orlando, FL. The NFDA headquarters moved last autumn to: 401 N. Michigan Ave. Ste. 2200, Chicago, IL
