U.S. Fastener Imports Drop in September
Both imports and exports of U.S. fasteners decreased in September, according to trade data released by the U.S. Census Bureau.
U.S. imports of iron or steel fasteners fell 12% to $357.7 million in September.
The top five import countries were Taiwan ($101.9m); China $82.7m); Japan ($50.2m); Germany ($23.3m); and Canada ($21.91m).
Overall U.S. fastener exports also declined during September, dropping 6% to $271.4 million.
The top five consumers of U.S. fasteners during the month were Canada ($87.3m); Mexico ($76.7m); UK ($12.3m); China ($11.4m); and Singapore ($7.55m).
The steepest export decline occurred with Mexico, with its consumption of U.S. fasteners falling 14.9%. That decline was partially offset by exports gains to China, which boosted its U.S. fastener consumption by 23%.
In August U.S. fastener exports rose 8% month-over-month to $287.5 million, while imports decreased 3% to $407 million. ©2012 GlobalFastenerNews.com
