U.S. Government Shutdown: Some Fastener Business Functions Affected

•  U.S. import and export trade data normally released by the U.S. Census Bureau near the beginning of each month has been delayed amid the federal government shut down.

•  “At this point in time we have not experienced any problems or additional delays in processing our shipments,” Bruce Wheeler of Star Stainless

• “The rivets and the tools that the government buys are going to be greatly reduced,” Fastening Systems International president Roger Nikkel told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. “The people that purchase them have been furloughed.”

The Sonoma, CA, manufacturer makes rivets for military machinery. Fastening Systems is one of dozens of Northern California defense contractors who sold an estimated $500 million worth of products and services to the federal government over the past decade.

A National Association of Government Contractors survey showed 29% of contractors find the shutdown will delay planned hiring and 58% anticipate a negative effect on their businesses.

Fastening Systems International has 12 local employees and 70% of its business has been  with the federal government.  Nikkel told the Press Democrat the manufacturer is diversifying its client base. ©2013 GlobalFastenerNews.com
