WASI Highlights Automated Handling System

When fastener supplier WASI built a second logistics facility in Wuppertal, Germany, in 2011, the company turned to KNAPP to provide an automated handling solution for the operation, Materials Handling World Magazine reports.

“The combined logistics capacity of the two warehouses provides 18,000m2 of covered storage, comprising 15,000 pallet locations and 150,000 carton locations,” Material Handling World reports. “WASI holds 15,000 tonnes of stock and achieves 10,000 picks per day in order to ship 200 tonnes of goods daily.”

WASI reportedly delivers orders directly to the customers of its clients, allowing the clients to reduce their fixed capital by holding less stock.

The new handling system includes KNAPP’s OSR ShuttleTM, which serves as an automatic small parts storage system featuring a shuttle served by high-speed lifts. A conveyor system then transports the containers to workstations that can process 540 containers per hour.

The system also utilizes KNAPP’s KiSoft Voice picking solution, allowing  pickers to use both hands when filling orders, Material Handling World reports.

Other features include a stacker crane system for pallet storage and retrieval and a conveyor system with dispatch lanes for sorting completed orders.

The system is controlled by KNAPP’s warehouse management system, KiSoft WMS, which includes a unified user interface that enables warehouse staff to control the entire system from the control station.

Founded in 1961, WASI is a Würth Group company with over 26,000 products includes screws, nuts, rings, washers, pins, rivets, rods and clamps. WASI employs over 250 people to serve some 6,000 customers in 60 countries. ©2012 GlobalFastenerNews.com
