West Coast Port Slowdown Continues
California oranges and Washington apples are rotting at Southern California ports. Electronics and clothing are bobbing on container ships within sight of the ports. Nintendo is running short of retail products and Honda is slowing automotive production in the U.S.
The dockworkers labor dispute at 29 U.S. West Coast ports is affecting various business sectors, from retail to manufacturing.
Labor secretary Tom Perez and Commerce secretary Penny Pritzker arrived on the West Coast representing President Barack Obama. The White House said it hopes to “urge (both sides) to resolve their dispute quickly at the bargaining table.”
Both the union and shippers blame each other for slowed freight movement at the West Coast ports, which handle a majority of U.S. imports.
