The Women in the Fastener Industry announced Sirena Trevino of Timberline Fasteners is its first scholarship recipient.

She will be able to use the $2,500 scholarship for a 2013 Fastener Training Institute program, committee chair Sandy Wilson said.

The scholarship honors the late Ann Bisgyer Wolz, who had been co-publisher of Fastener Industry News.

A native of New York City, Ann first worked in the fastener industry during high school for her stepfather, Eric Cohn, at Allied International.

After earning a masters degree from George Washington University, her first job was in college administration; then she entered the trade show industry in New York City.

Ann returned to the fastener industry when she and spouse John Wolz acquired Fastener Industry News in 1994 and they shared co-publisher titles. In addition to handling the business side of FIN, she owned and operated Expo Experts, a trade show management firm.  Her trade show and meeting planning expertise aided FIN’s news coverage of industry events.

First diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993, she went through numerous treatments to put the disease in remission. Upon a metastatic recurrence diagnosis in 2000, her textbook life expectancy at that point was one to three years, but she lived to 2012.

WIFI also offers the Edith Cameron scholarship to help a woman in the industry attend a fastener trade show.

In 1937 Cameron took a summer job with Anti-Corrosive Metal Products Co. in Castleton, NY, for $12 per 5 1/2-day week. Cameron worked with multiple companies during her 56-year fastener. She retired in 1993.
